Review of Things to Come (1936) by Stephen A — 15 Aug 2007
This very appealing 1936 film, based on a work by HG Wells, follows the lives of English chums and their descendants through more than 100 years of often violent history, culminating in a paradise. Eerily predicting World War II bombing raids on London, but fortunately overestimating the war's length by two decades, we learn how a society destroys itself and renews iteslf.
A bit preachy towards the end, but remember this was for a 1936 audience, for whom wholesome messages were easily accepted. This Hollywood Classics DVD, bundled with another film, is an improvement in quality over old VHS tapes of this film I sadly bought years ago.
