Review of Things to Come (1936) by Stephen L — 17 May 2011
How could I have not enjoyed a movie that was one of the many inspirations for my all time favourite movie? First of all, the interesting part took way too long to happen. It wasnâ(TM)t until the one-hour mark that it stopped being a preachy anti-war movie and started being a cool sci-fi movie.
The design of the futuristic city is really cool, or at least Iâ(TM)m sure it was because I canâ(TM)t tell whatâ(TM)s happening on screen. The surviving film is such poor quality that it makes the otherwise impressive visuals trivial.
It looks like they filmed this movie on fruit by the foot (like the new Nicholas Cage movie). Metropolis came out nearly 10 years earlier and somehow managed to hold up over the years. Not only is the film-quality way worse than metropolis, but itâ(TM)s way more boring and less visually impressive than Metropolis, and mind you, Metropolis is a silent movie.
If you want a good anti war movie thereâ(TM)s Paths of Glory and Full Metal Jacket, if you want to see a cool science- finctiony city, thereâ(TM)s Metropolis, Blade Runner and the Fifth Element. There is nothing special about this movie.
It is out-dated, out-matched and out-witted.
