Review of Things to Come (1936) by Douglas V — 27 Jul 2008
Eerily accurate with the start of the next World War (Christmas 1940 - 13 months out!) this film is a grand attempt to bring HG Wells' novel of future history to the big screen. Full of bold speeches (the screenplay was written by Wells himself, and why not?) and grand performances by Raymond Massey and Ralph Richardson, this is more than just a curiosity, this film is a landmark of visual effects; from the 'futuristic' flying machines to the 'space gun' this must have been such a spectacle to the audiences of 1936.
It also features a dogfight filmed in the air - surely a first - as well as a very modern 21st Century helicopter, not long after the first real-life demonstration of one in Berlin. Bloody marvellous, all in all!
