A technical masterpiece, Thief sees director Michael Mann at the height of his powers, and the film, which exhibits a simmering performance by James Caan as a career criminal trying to make an honest man out of himself, is a modest predecessor to the director's magnum opus and crime epic, Heat.

This is certainly not a crime film so much as a character piece laced with crime elements, and Mann's attention to detail and eye for authenticity has never been more apparent than in this intimate, darker exploration into the psyche of the professional thief.

An absolute must for Mann aficionados and those who appreciate quality crime dramas.
