Review of They Came Together (2014) by Roxanne R — 04 Sep 2014
What a disappointment considering my two favorite comedy stars are reunited after a few episodes of Parks and Recreation where they played opposing candidates running for office. The problem was not our beloved stars, they followed a script.
The problem plain and simple was the script! I completely agree with Manohla Dargis of the NY Times when she said: "A series of hit-and-miss sketch-comedy bits rather than a fully realized movie that might have gutted contemporary rom-com clichés rather than just weakly aping them.
" To make matters worse, some of the lines were in very bad taste. This is basically a parody of romantic comedies infused with Showalter and Wain's absurd approach. We have two New Yorkers named Joel (Rudd) and Molly (Poehler).
Joel is an executive at a huge candy corporation and Molly owns a small candy store near Manhattan. When they initially meet, it's hate at first sight: his big Corporate Candy Company threatens to shut down her quirky indie candy shop.
The story continues from there but I must say Molly's fascination with NYC referring to it as her boyfriend and an important character of their life reminded me of my love for Los Angeles so kudos to that line! What this film compels me to do is visiting NYC because the parks and the Brooklyn Promenade look stunning.
Wait for it to appear on Netflix then watch it.
