Review of The Wiz (1978) by Chiara G — 19 Jul 2009
The "all black, all Motown stars" disco version of the Wizard of Oz. Diana Ross plays Dorothy but miles away from Judy Garland's childish role. She's just a kindergarten teacher who seems to be afraid of her own shade, looking for his runaway pooch Toto.
Instead of a twister in Kansas, now the action begins with a New York snowstorm and the legendary golden brick lane pass through NYC metro. Michael Jackson as "the Scarecrow" and Richard Pryor as the "Wizard of Oz" are the true celebrities behind Diana.
This flick was a huge flop, but after Jacko's passing away all the fans are rediscovering this unique and pretty ambitious project by Sidney Lumet.
