Review of The Wild Bunch (1969) by Kwende M — 31 Jan 2008
One of the best, most violent and most cynical of Westerns ever made. This is not the idealized west of John Wayne - this is the lawless west at its most immoral, where everyone is implicated in the inherent violence of humanity.
Peckinpah is a tad bit more subtle here than in Straw Dogs - his other similar exploration of humanity's heart of darkness - but in this larger canvas his criticism is perhaps even more cogent and damning.
Featuring the most frenzied and bloody final shoot-out this side of Michael Bay and John Woo (and with the quick cuts to match), The Wild Bunch is a knockout.
