Review of The Whole Wide World (1996) by Dean K — 06 Dec 2014
Renee Zellweger stars as a Southern spinster who falls for an unstable writer named Robert B Howard (aka the creator of Conan the Barbarian). Howard (Vincent D'Onofrio) is unpredictable and never knows what he wants but he builds a friendship with Zellweger's character.
By the time he hurts her the third time, I wanted to shut the movie off. What was the point? Why was she so obsessed with him? I could see her interest in his writing because to this day I still love all the Conan stories from Howard which was the reason I wanted to see this film.
But everything about him made her hate him more. So why keep going even if he is a savant. The best I could compare it to was "Wuthering Heights" where Cathy falls for Heathcliff even though she despises him.
The heroine does smarten up but by then we really don't care. (1 out of 5) So Says the Soothsayer.
