Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Taylor M — 07 Jul 2013
Perhaps this film isn't immediately striking, perhaps on some levels it is, but it does stick with you. The Virgin Suicides demonstrates Coppola's incredible ability to capture time and place, peach schnapps, pot and cigarettes- All things that throw you right into the 70's.
The subject matter is dark, incredibly dark and dealt with in such sterile apathy, there is little sympathy, little emotion, it just is. I loved this film, it was slow, at points dull but perfectly so.
Everything culminates in the perfectly orchestrated suicide pact at the end, the stories are over, and everything is perfectly dead. The perverted depiction of the upper class in the asphyxiation party appeals to the darkest, most perverted level of humour.
