Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Brandon W — 25 Jul 2017
The Virgin Suicides is directed and written by Sofia Coppola in her directorial debut, and it stars James Woods, Kathleen Turner, Kirsten Dunst, and Josh Hartnett in a drama film about a group of sisters that caught the boys' attention, and when one of their sisters have commit suicide, people didn't really know why until we get into the girls' story.
Ever since I watched the trailer for The Beguilled, I always wanted to watch all of Sofia Coppola's films that she directed, and the ones that I've seen, were Lost in Translation and The Bling Ring.
So when I was in the city library, I pretty much thought, "Why not start at her directing career and go to the recent ones?" which I rented only this and Lost in Translation. So let's get on with The Virgin Suicides, which is a solid debut from Sofia Coppola.
The acting is great, which is cool to see Kirsten Dunst in one of her first main roles, and the child actors at the time were surprisingly really good of acting like actual kids without it being really annoying.
The story is well-effective that I was interested in what's going on, and the characters' situations are relatable to some of my friends that I know that have parents who act like them, which is understandable to see the actions that these characters do.
The issue being however, is that it's not as effective as it wants to be because I barely know anything about these characters in what makes those girls so special, other then the boys thinking that they are attractive-looking, and what they are going through, that's pretty much it.
Another issue that I did have with it is that the first act can be a bit slow, which I actually did have some attempts to watch this before when it was on Netflix, but I stop watching it because of how slow it was.
The second act is where it gets interesting as it tells the story from a bunch of kids that are neighbors with the girls, and can only talk through the phone. In the end, The Virgin Suicides is a great film that I'm looking forward to Lost in Translation, the movie that made Sofia Coppola well-known.
