Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Shane R — 13 Jun 2007
This one is actually rough to watch for me. its a medieval scandanavian setting where a christian girl gets raped and killed and her father exacts revenge. the rape scene was originally editted out and merely suggested but the really terrible thing for me to watch was how personal the violence of the fathers retribution was.
and it wasnt that it was gory or somehow more horrible to see than most films today. it was just so emotional that it took me off guard. powerful filmmaking. the shot that bergman gets when max von sydow's character finds the body of his daughter is amazing.
