Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Kenny E — 22 Jul 2012
I didn't expect much of this. But, as always, Bergman has a way of making me re-fall in love with cinema, even though I already was. And I don't believe in God and almost all Bergman films are on that subject.
Anyway, the plot, of course is simple, but a powerful plot in itself. Max von Sydow and Ingmar Bergman were essential to making this film a masterpiece, they are irreplaceable. The film is about forgiveness.
The father was forgiving of the daughter even though she is lazy, disobedient and always gets her way. Then when she gets raped and murdered, the father leaves her sins way far behind his immediate actions.
The film is masterfully shot, absorbing, brilliantly constructed, fiercely acted, and it's directed by Bergman.
