I've only seen about 5 Bergman movies so far and it's already clear his movies are going to look outstanding, the story will be timeless and it'll make the wheels turn. The Virgin Spring is no exception.
In any other filmmaker's hands the ending would be contrived, with Bergman it's heavy, touching and utterly brilliant.
