Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by John M — 24 Apr 2009
If I were allowed exactly two words to describe this movie, I would use "slow" and "beautiful." While the movie moved beautifully from one scene to another--even making the grizly rape scene beautiful in its own right--there were moments when I literally shouted at the screen things like, "I got it.
He's sad, and the scene is pretty. I got it. Move on. Yes, he's sad, and it's pretty." This movie is at its heart a morality tale, but the moral isn't as simple as "be a good Christian," which it so easily could have.
I will be sorting out this movie's moral message for years to come, which I find to be the hallmark of a great morality tale. Beautiful movie, if slow.
