Review of The Vampire Lovers (1970) by Forrest K — 23 Oct 2010
Hammer Films of the 70s retained their gothic roots while embracing the boundary-pushing exploitation cinema aesthetic - and thus, the first scene of this film features an onscreen (yet, dare I say tasteful?) decapitation.
Hammer's atmosphere still drapes across every frame. Nothing says horror like gloomy castles, tall, dark, pale men and low-cut, heaving bodices. "The Vampire Lovers" is the tale of a lesbian vampire, and whether it functions as a high camp send-up of the fear of the hypnotic power of the homosexual or a cleverly subversive story of the vilification of the unknown, I can't tell - perhaps both.
However, it is absolutely entertaining, dripping with style and wit horror films seldom achieve anymore.
