Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Donovan D — 07 Nov 2007
I have to admit that I'm not much of a fan of musicals and besides one or two exceptions I've never been particularly moved by them. Jacque Demy's the Umbrellas of Cherbourg, with it beautiful color photography and Michel Legrand score, is one such exception.
With every single line of dialogue sung, the unreal, expressionistic quality of the musical is utilized perfectly in reflecting the idealism of young love, and the usual saccharine quality of the American musical is tempered by a very French sense of romantic tragedy.
Touching and utterly heartbreaking, the Umbrellas of Cherbourg is by far the greatest music I have ever seen.
