Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Brooke M — 22 Apr 2008
Even though I didn't like this all that much upon first viewing, this film is a remarkable achievement in cinema. First of all, the film's dialogue is ENTIRELY SUNG throughout the WHOLE movie. The plot is what bothered me, but many go for that tragic, wasted romance thing.
Catherine Deneuve in her breakout role is beautiful, adorable and very convincing, and the painstaking color cinematography is incredible. Jacques Demy = genius.
