Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by G. Brandon H — 19 Aug 2008
Catherine Deneuve is the most beautiful woman, besides maybe Ingrid Bergman, who has ever been committed to film. What's amazing is that this film doesn't pale in comparison to her beauty. Jacques Demy created a film so beautiful, I found myself wanting to taste it rather than watch it.
It can be jarring at first, since all the dialog is sung, and it is strange to read subtitles when someone's singing. But it is worth it. One of the most beautiful films ever made, and the ending is both heartbreaking and heartening in a way I've only seen in one other film: Fellini's magnificent Nights of Cabiria.
