Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Darryl J — 11 Oct 2008
Not a perfect movie, by any means, but I have a nostalgic love for it, having seen it first on tv (in black and white) when a teenager. The last scene, when the two lovers have their last meeting, while the snow falls around them and the love theme swells around them had me in floods of tears.
I was fortunate enough to get a part in the stage adaptation of the show at the Phoenix Theatre back in 1980. I thought the show was lovely, but the critics absolutely hated it, and, though it had been impossible to get seats during previews, we had no advance and the critics killed it.
