Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Bass 9 — 14 Apr 2009
One of the best love stories ever made, besides Romeo and Juliet of course. The best use of dialogue as a weapon that I've ever seen in a movie, it has the magic of an golden age musical, the romanticism seen on the french world and the whole existentialism that makes europeans, who they are.
Before Jean Pierre Jeunet came with his frantic art directions, this movie did it first, from clear and bright colors, until dark and gloomy, a gorgeous screenplay and a beautiful Catherine Deneuve make this movie a perfect combination between a great screenplay and a great spectacle.
Whoever wants to be an art director should see this movie frame by frame, extremely amazing.
