Review of The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) by David C — 03 Jan 2014
The Thomas Crown Affair (1968).
I know; we were split-screen-crazy in the 70s. That was done to death. :-) The Thomas Crown Affair (and Le Mans) was instrumental in starting this trend. This movie had the most ultra-cool characters. Steve McQueen has been the epitome of cool (look in the dictionary next to "cool" is that leaning picture of him from Bullet) and Faye Dunaway, fresh from her Bonnie & Clyde film (even with all of that 60's make-up), was the hottest actress of the time.
Thomas Crown (McQueen) is a millionaire who can't help dipping his toes into the larceny pool. I don't know whether it's ego, or the boredom, because he obviously doesn't need the money. Thomas meticulously plans out a robbery involving criminals with no association with each other.
Despite the best work from Detective Eddy Malone (Paul Burke), the insurance company calls in Vicky Anderson (Dunaway) to help investigate. She basically picks Thomas's photo and says that's the guy. She uses all of her feminine whiles to get Thomas to confess, or cut a deal, without success. Maybe she can cause him to make a mistake on his next caper, and there will be another caper.
