Review of The Third Man (1949) by Jonathan D — 16 Jan 2011
This movie is a time capsule of sorts. While the story, characters and climax are unusually intriguing, the best character of them all is the setting -- post-World War II Vienna. Everything about the story, from the plot to the characters to the final chase, is dependent on the setting. I really like this kind of film making.
Plot: As the people of Vienna are still digging out of bombed-out buildings and occupation by foreign powers, a newly-arrived American tries to find out if the death of his friend was truly an accident, and what roles the people who knew his deceased friend played in his last moments.
While this was an entertaining story, the ending sequence in the sewers of Vienna is a bit anti-climactic and goes on too long. But the story is an interesting character study which will leave you wondering who to root for, and who the Third Man really is.
