Review of The Third Man (1949) by Jarred K — 02 Oct 2009
Over time, The Third Man has garnered more analysis, more appreciation, and more hype than any other film noir in history. The most essential elements of the film - the artistry that basically makes this film so tremendous - are cinematography and lighting. The camera angles capture perfect images that contribute beautifully to the atmosphere and the story of the film. The lighting entices you, so that you become a part of the world of post-war Vienna. The overall experience leaves the audience with an incredible feeling of both reality and mystery. The first time I watched this film, I remember looking around as the credits rolled and suddenly realized that there was color in the world!
An incredibly well-acted cast, beautiful scenery, flawless costumes, sharp dialogue, and phenomenal directing by the infamous Carol Reed brought this movie to life. Not very much else can be said about this film without ruining it before the viewer has had their chance at it. It is simply one of the select few films from that time that can be accurately called a masterpiece. A film noir that is without a doubt worth the time.
