Review of The Thing (2011) by Jay L — 17 Apr 2012

I'm a huge fan of the carpenter film. So as all other fans I have no expectation of anything good coming out of this movie.

I have been burnt before by the alien, clash of the titans, predator, and other stories that keep getting told simply to make quick $$.

This is not as bad as some of those but still not that good. It's a prequel telling the events that took place right before carpenters version. First my biggest complaint (that seems to be to common in recent movies) is the CGI. I remember watching other movies and not able to tell what was CGI and what was real fx. That is not the case here. The CGI looks poor, it has no real quality. That takes me right out of the movie. I hate cheap CGI.

Next the charters, one of the guys has a very strong resemblance to Kurt Russell's charter. I felt the all the older members looked and fit the parts great. However the younger more featured actors felt like they didn't belong in this movie.

The story is ok, a lot of the scenes seemed similar to the carpenter version.

It has a few creative moments but over all you don't learn anything new about the situation. I felt the ending was the standard lame ending you would expect.

Overall this is an ok movie but hard fans will come away wish from move creative situations.
