Review of The Thief of Bagdad (1940) by Rajiv P — 03 Dec 2007
It is so nice to see a movie that knows how to use colour! The production design--taking full advantage of the Technicolor process--puts primary colours on everything. It's wonderful--the sets, matte painting, costumes are all great.
The special effects aren't bad--certainly no worse than most of the stuff you saw until Star Wars. Yes, the dialogue is kind of corny, but if you are open to its sheer earnestness, it will enterain you.
In addition to the classic "genie" scene, there are other moments of greatness: the "Silver Maiden" scene (weird!), the appearance of the Old King and the spider battle. If you can get past the time it was made (Sabu is the real hero of this movie) and just enjoy it, it is great fun.
