Review of The Thief of Bagdad (1940) by Ross B — 08 May 2013
If it had been made 30 or 40 years later it'd probably be a B film. But the surprise is that it's 30 or 40 years older than it actually looks. It's hardly anything outside of the standard classical Hollywood perceptions of Eastern culture, mixed in with some of that roaring twenties glamour disguised under multiple limbs and painted-blue skin.
The green screen work as well as beyond-life size prosthetics will surely cue a chuckle, but in the end it's truly mesmerizing epic stuff. No Lord of the Rings could have been made without this.
