Review of The Swarm (1978) by Greg W — 12 Apr 2015
Why worry about shaving when someone is about to cut your head off?
A swarm of African bees in South Texas begins making their way north to Houston. Initially, the government trusts a group of scientists to stop the swarm, but their initial plan falls short, leading to military action. Military action yields no better results. When all else fails, it may be up to the scientists to fully execute their plan in a final last ditch effort of the bees may destroy America as we know it.
"I come here reluctantly.".
"That's better than not at all.".
Irwin Allen, director of The Lost World, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, City Beneath the Sea, and Beyond Poseidon Adventure, delivers The Swarm. The storyline for this picture is just okay and not particularly intense or dramatic. The cast delivers better than anticipated performances and includes Michael Caine, Katherine Ross, Richard Widmark, Richard Chamberlain, Ben Johnson, and Lee Grant.
"It was big, about the size of this room.".
I surprisingly found this on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and had to DVR this classic Michael Caine picture. Unfortunately, this "monster movie" is very mediocre and disappointing. There isn't much going for this outside of solid acting performances by the entire cast. Overall, I'd probably skip this picture.
"Whatever it is, it's big.".
Grade: C-.
