Review of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1997) by Karen S — 08 May 2008

I was a little hesitant to view this film at first, because I was never a fan of previous renditions. Though I have to agree with some of the reviews, the film did have some interesting underwater footage, but none really stood out for me.

I would prefer to watch "Planet Earth" for spectacular underwater footage over this film. But that's another story, back to the review, the film failed to impress me in anyway. The film's introduction was also lacking for me.

I already felt bored and tired by just watching the introduction credits. I know that this film is a little outdated -- 1997 -- but the film should at least stand the test of time -- including a television-made film.

An example could be the "Merlin" miniseries which was released in the same year. "The Odyssey" a year before that. Those two films aforementioned were made quite well, and it seems this film was created within the same studio: Hallmark Entertainment.

Another thing I would like to point out was the slow progress in the film's story and plot. There were some interesting moments, but none really took my breath away, including the ending battle between the beast and the submarine.

I don't know, I felt the film could have been more interesting if the studio put more effort in the film's setting and the pace of each scene. I would like to enjoy it, but I didn't. But on the bright side, the film's cast was somewhat interesting.

The film's character development wasn't that bad, and I have to agree with another review, it was neat how the film portrayed Caption Nemo is a mysterious character, but suddenly, became more of a brute and a dictator.

But overall, the wasn't that exciting to me. Though did I waste my time? Not really. I like to expose myself to different films now and then, bad or good.
