Review of The Shootist (1976) by Dylan D — 13 Aug 2008
One of the saddest motion pictures ever made.
John Wayne's final, and perhaps best film is tragically underrated in the slew of westerns. People speak of many other Wayne films, but this isn't discussed as often. The character study of Wayne's character is supremely well done. The conflict that resolves around his battle with life and death alludes to John Wayne's own struggle at the time of filming.
The most iconic actor of all time blesses our eyes with his final film. It may have the saddest ending I've ever seen. When the film fades to black you realize that a hero's life ended just as the film did. Tears stream down my face just thinking about it. John Wayne, you are my hero. Perfect in every single way.
