Review of The Shootist (1976) by Jacob M — 28 Dec 2013
The last film starring John Wayne, The Shootist is also one of his best films. Wayne plays a dying gunfighter who determines to go down fighting and help others out in need. Wayne was literally dying while making this film, so moments where characters discuss Wayne's mental state is extremely moving.
The casting is excellent, including Wayne, who should've gotten an Oscar nomination here, Jimmy Stewart, Lauren Bacall, Harry Morgan, Ron Howard, Scatman Crothers, John Carradine, and Hugh O'Brian.
Elmer Bernstein's score is remarkably well-done and that shootout finale is extremely excellent and is a great and wonderful ending to the career of the legendary John Wayne.
