Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Panos Y — 14 Apr 2018
While this movie is beautifully and artistically filmed, its storyline is too simplistic for my taste. Stripping a story down to its fundamental core works sometimes, but when you're doing it to make sweeping "Truth" statements, the approach can be inaccurate and dangerous.
Swinging the pendulum to the other extreme doesn't correct wrongs, it only flips the script, playing out the same problems, but from the other side. Not all Caucasian authority figures are "bad".
Not all outsiders are victims, nor are all marginal groups "good". The broad strokes used to paint characters in this film certainly appeals in the current climate, but it ultimately fails to address social complexities in any kind of truly intelligent, insightful and constructive manner.
