Like Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water blurs the lines between fantasy and reality, bringing us another well told fairytale that is a fitting tribute to old classic Hollywood and monster movies. Sally Hawkins plays Elisa who is mute and leads a pretty solitary life whose days are full of routine, working in an underground government facility in the 1960s. It is here she forms a connection with a creature being kept and tortured by big baddie Michael Shannon and so plans his escape. The creature is played by Doug Jones who has appeared in many of Del Toro's films and plays the perfect counterpart of Elisa here.
The film is a beautiful, strange love story set in a world of grown up fairytales. Definitely worth a watch.
