Review of The Second Mother (2015) by Dani P — 02 Sep 2015
No doubt there's a lot of commentary (political, cultural, social, economic) in the underbelly of this dramedy from Brazil, however, its many layers are uncovered in a gentle, natural pace and feel, therefore blending well with the plot rather than being out of place.
Regina Case's ability to portray a mostly unaffected, almost folksy domestic helper is the key strength of the movie, as the audience easily distinguishes the many contrasts between her, her own daughter and her employer family. In a lot of ways, this film encapsulates vividly the country of Brazil currently at a crossroads as it continues maturing towards being a possible global superpower.
Expect the film to be on the Best Foreign Film shortlist, and perhaps some Best Actress consideration for Case.
