Review of The Searchers (1956) by Robbie H — 07 Jul 2010
Was quite excited to watch this film as it being heralded as John Fords masterpiece and Waynes best film..yada yada yada...anyways I was more dissapointed than satisfied...the film was certainly beautifully shot.
..with long shots of the gorgeous Monument Valley..scenes of snow and deep valleys...the color was perfect too....indeed Wayne gives a fine performance....some excellent tense action scenes..etc...but overall it dragged a bit in places and the characters were less than memorable and poorly acted besides Wayne and Ward Bond.
..we dont spend enough time with Debbie to become emotionallyt attached to her to really even care that she was abducted..so when they find her it's like "whos that?"...Jeffrey Hunter badly overracts to the point of beyond annoyance.
..and his girlfriend in the film made me sick....there wasnt much of a score either...i dunno..it was a good film sure..but I dont see how ppl say this is waynes best film....i havent seen all of wayne's work but so far the best I have seen is the near flawless epic "Red River".
