Review of The Searchers (1956) by Charlie H — 02 Aug 2017
The Searchers (1956) is a beautifully shot western, following one of the most fascinating characters in cinematic history in Ethan Edwards. The Searchers' central character is multi-dimensional, and the audiences' struggle to understand him is what makes The Searchers compelling.
To call it 'good characterisation' would be a understatement; The Searchers scrupulously studies its characters motivations & prejudice. These character studies are embedded within an exciting plot.
The film's comic relief is welcome between depictions of characters' harsh racist attitudes. John Wayne's performance in The Searchers is astounding: he embodies everything flawed about human nature, from prejudice to desire for violence.
The Searchers is a film that makes you think. Its story and multidimensional characters are shown through genuinely beautiful cinematography. If you only watch one western in your life, I implore you to watch The Searchers.
It's an amazing film that you mustn't miss.
