Review of The Searchers (1956) by Jonathan B — 28 Oct 2010

I'm going to be honest, I really don't like John Ford movies. I find them to be xenophobic, imperialist, and misogynistic. Lets face it, what other American filmmaking legend could get away with "Do You Want To Be Spanked" and mean it? What makes this outing different is that Ford pulls back the curtain on his narrative and shows us the underlining ugliness and hate behind his Western legends, but I'm not sure that was intentional.

You've never seen a more hateful depiction of human beings in a western. I'm vaguely troubled that this has become an American classic. That being said, the visuals are fucking beautiful.
