Review of The Searchers (1956) by Nathan E — 22 Aug 2012
Beautiful film. The shots of Monument Valley are majestic and amazing. Makes me want to go visit myself.
This is one of the Duke's most nuanced performances. His Ethan is a man battered down and disillusioned from his experiences. Even Wayne's trademark swagger is hindered by all of the things going on in Ethan's head.
Ethan's obsessive quest to retrieve his niece must be driven by some desire to redeem himself and his humanity. It's a blatantly selfish quest that almost turns tragic because of his pride and selfishness. It's not the typical John Wayne type protagonist (which I do love, by the way). This results in a character arc that is very poignant.
