Review of The Sacrifice (1986) by Edmund T — 06 Feb 2010
A confusing movie about a man who makes a sacrifice in what he sees as an attempt to save his family and friends. Although Alexander tells his son that "there is no such thing as death, only the fear of death", it does not mean that he is above that fear.
The impending doom that the characters face (and react differently to) mirrors Tarkovsky's real-life situation at the time: this was Tarkovsky's last film as he waited for cancer to take his life.
This is an art film in the purest sense. Sound seems to play a large role and the cinematography was my biggest take-away. There are a lot of things about the film that are unclear to me, but it is good enough to warrant a second viewing.
