Review of The Rose (1979) by Andrew C — 04 Dec 2010
Look, I've grown up listening to the song "The Rose" from this movie and absolutely love it.
I was told that the movie was really good and it had some correlations to the Janis Joplin story.
However, after watching it.... I feel that it really lacked what I would call a genuine sense of sympathy/empathy.
I'd say movies like "Selena" really hit that level of feeling for a performer and what she had to go through to maintain her position in the limelight ... and it seemed like that could have been done a whole lot more effectively in this film... the director/crew just didn't do it.
Instead you see a really messed up woman who yells at, kicks, and sleeps with the guy she "loves" and then wonders why the whole world is moving away from her. So sad.
If they had shown more elements from her past, more of her transition from who she was to where she ended and then tagged the last five minutes of the movie, this would have been much better.
Anyway, a bit of a downer.
