Review of The Revolution Generation (2022) by Izzymladen — 13 Jun 2022
How phenomenal is it when a film is able to change how you view yourself and the world around you? I went into The Revolution Generation: How Millennials Can Save America and the World anticipating a simple exposition on the youth’s contributions to various causes.
While it certainly delivered on that, I greatly appreciated the detailed counter to the negative stereotypes that millennials are lazy, narcissistic ingrates. Directors Josh and Rebecca Tickell offer a new narrative about "complaining" millennials, one that praises our perseverance in the wake of a world that’s falling apart - one where our critical words are followed by productive actions.
With Michelle Rodriguez’s narration and celebrity interviews (such as Corbin Bleu and Shailene Woodley), the film divulges the unique set of mental health challenges native to the millennial world, from the self-image issues instilled by social media to the anxiety of an impending climate crisis.
I was particularly captivated by learning about millennial overmedication due to frequent external stressors, such as our low economic standing. However, Revolution Generation’s main point is that, despite the stress of our lives, we are at the vanguard of the fights for societal justice.
The film leaves us on the hopeful note that while millennials inherited a troubled world, we are the ones actively working to heal it.
