Review of The Returned (2004) by Cameron Liam I — 28 Jul 2013
If, like me, you've just finished watching The Returned on TV you might want to watch this in search of answers to the many questions left unanswered by the series finale, but you won't find any here.
It's essentially the same story: people from a small town come back from the dead and leave everyone confused as to why and how they've returned. The difference is the movie is more of a science fiction horror story, with the living using science to try to figure out what's going on with the zombie horde, whereas the TV show is more supernatural, the inhabitants of the town looking to spirituality and philosophy to answer their questions.
The difference in tone is quite stark, too. Les Revenants are notably more zombie-like and creepy in the movie, whereas in the TV show they retain much of their humanity, making the movie a very straightforward horror story in comparison to the bleak psychological horror that goes with getting to know the 'zombies' as people and watching them slowly decay.
Not a big fan of zombie films in general, but this stands out as a very interesting twist on what can be done with the genre.
