Review of The Quiet Man (1952) by Spike W — 23 Mar 2008
What a beautiful movie! John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara together are nuanced, abashed, and charmingly clumsy. The movie was produced by a first generation Irish immigrant, so I don't think there's a lot of stereotyping going on, at least not more than can be used successfully in a comedy like this.
John Ford made his career with westerns and patriotic WWII films, but this movie alone shows that he had utterly mastered the crafts of directing, editing, and understand plot. Such a breath of fresh air when a movie doesn't have it's all-too-predictable conflict at exactly 15 minutes in.
