Review of The Quiet Man (1952) by Richard D — 08 Aug 2014
This isn't Ireland. It's John Ford's Ireland, which much like Ford's American West, is an idealized version of a time and place he dearly loves. This is quite a bit like a Ford western transported to Ireland.
His themes of community and individual responsibility transport well to his vision of Ireland. The film's also quite significantly about drinking, fighting and not taking any guff from women, so it's definitely not a film for the more sensitive side of modern sensibilities.
It's a beautiful film to look at and I can't really imagine anyone who's already fond of Ford not being really fond of it.
