Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Nate W — 17 Jun 2009
This whimsical satire on the films that cheered up millions of Americans during the Great Depression may not be the most hilarious of Woody Allen's career, but it's one of his more creative outings.
Mia Farrow is wonderful as a woman who, in an attempt to escape her miserable life, watches the same movie so many times that it literally jumps off the screen, in the form of the well-cast Jeff Daniels.
Some of the comedic (and not-so-comedic) comparisons between real life and the movies are a bit overdrawn, but this is still a funny and heartbreaking little film.
