Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Peter F — 18 Nov 2014
A clever concept that's giving a whimsical direction by Woody Allen. The Purple Rose of Cairo may on the surface appear to be just a comic fantasy, but it's subtext involving cinematic disillusionment and celebrity politics are definitely the work of one American's cinema's most intellectual auteurs.
Not cerebral as Woody Allen's best, but more effective than most of his supernatural-based work (including Midnight in Paris).
