Review of The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) by Donna H — 25 Dec 2011
I am not a big fan of Woody Allen, but his recent "Midnight in Paris" reminded me of what I believe is his best film, "Purple Rose of Cairo." A thought-provoking look at movies as a means of escape, "Purple Rose" also addresses reality versus fantasy: how some viewers come to believe that the idealized romantic story on the screen (or on TV) is what their life ought to be like.
It's well-acted, clever, has some memorable lines, and has an ending you'll want to talk about. "Purple Rose" should have gotten more attention when it came out, but it's well worth renting!
