Review of The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939) by Matthew B — 25 Oct 2008
IT WAS VINCENT PRICE! I thought that Sir Raleigh was him for the entire thing, and I kept thinking "Vincent Price is such a good actor, but this is not a movie that he would do...".
But as for the (majority of the) movie...I'm actually surprised to hear of off-screen bad blood between Davis and Flynn, because they actually have surprisingly good on-screen chemistry. It was very interesting to watch this movie because the time that it was made almost forced the Queen to submit herself to Essex -- despite what history says. I doubt that Elizabeth would allow herself to be coddled and looked down upon by a subject. However, if you're looking for a more realistic depiction...you're looking for Cate Blanchette...not Bette Davis. Hers was an era of epic romance, and this movie does not disappoint. 1939 was a very good year for movies.
