Review of The Piano Teacher (2001) by Cory T — 26 Jul 2008
Twisted and disturbing, there were a few scenes here that managed to make me cringe, and thats very hard for a film to do to me as a viewer. why this is so noteworthy and innovative, is its use of character work as its strongest artistic element, yet its notions of disturbance managed to share the stage freely throughout its scenes.
haneke has created something truly strange and different here. strong performances from huppert, magimel and girardot hold the greatest spotlight in the actors' circle, but the lengths at which it goes to push boundaries compete in a very unshy manner.
the ending may come off as ambiguous and frustrating and I do reccomend an effort research if you find yourself confused and frustrated by it, but its no doubt a symbolic approach to one character's true inner demons and how she confronts them.
