Review of The Piano Teacher (2001) by Erin O — 09 Sep 2015
Isabelle Huppert is phenomenal in Michael Haneke's tense study of pensive passions and repressed desires. Haneke explores how the realisation of fantasy often ends in nightmare, thorough his static, discomforting frames. Huppert stuns and subverts sympathetic expectations as a tormented, high society teacher.
As an audience,we're always aware of the sadness simmering inside of Huppert's character, and even when she's at her sickest and most violent, we still feel for her, her background, her anguish and her bizarre living arrangements.
Only Isabelle Huppert could maintain grace and enchant audiences whilst sniffing semen-stained tissues. Only Michael Haneke could make this devastating, drastic film.
