Review of The Phantom of the Opera (1925) by Robert D — 22 Feb 2011
One of gleaming gems of the silent era, and Lon Chaney's best performance up until he died of throat cancer. Lon Chaney is the man! He did his own makeup, and he mastered the art of sign language, because his parents were deaf, and this makeup was pretty terrifying for 1925.
Besides a really cool color sequence, what makes this movie awesome, is it's slow suspensful pace, it's eerie tone, and of course, Lon Chaney. So pick up this horror classic, and the impact it made on other horror movies ages to come.
